Staying Positive and Happy

Image
Its a day before my husband’s landmark birthday and we had plans.  We had planned for a long time for this day.  It was going to be in Italy with our friends and family.  A dream vacation we had waited for. But first week of April 2021, and our lives and of almost every one in India changed.  In just two weeks many  of our family and friends were infected in varying degree.  Some recovered in days and others were fighting for survival.  Those healthy were frantically arranging for vanishing medical support. The country ran out of hospital beds, medicines and even oxygen. Every morning came with news of funeral services and need for help. My world was turning upside down and I was at my lowest.  Probably that is how depression and extreme emotional exhaustion feels.  At one point I turned off my phone and decided to cut off from the world to get back my normal life.  But this did not help. My family, friends and colleagues needed me. Ther...

Motherhood - Can I ever pen down its depths

Image
A mother's love is infinite and selfless. Each bond a mother has with their child is unique and cannot be copied. Even though every mother has their own way of parenting. On the occasion of Mother's Day I took on the task of sharing some experiences and learnings from some of the wonderful moms I have know. I had the honor to discuss with a very dear friend in the US (Vickie) and a close friend from college (Aparna).  Each of these lovely ladies have been an integral part of my life for over 3 decades.   My inability to do justice to their infinite love and humility became apparent as soon as I began writing their thoughts.  Despite my limited abilities I have tried to share (hopefully at least a part) their message with sincerity.  For the sake of brevity I will try to use their expressions as far as possible. What is Motherhood? This is a favorite topic for all three mothers and they can go on endlessly.  They all want their children to be happy. It...

Handmade Pottery in Icheon, South Korea

Image
Collecting handmade pottery is one of my greatest passions.  Its my way of disconnecting from the world and floating in to a rhythmic, peaceful and infinite world. My love for pottery began when I moved to Japan over 20 years back and was hosting some lovely ladies from the Church.  Up until then pottery was a mom's thing and I was still in my early 20s.  Disposables and funky plastics were just fine.  Just before the 2020 pandemic we moved to South Korea.  My love for handmade pottery found the ideal place to explore Korean handmade pottery -Icheon.  Its an entire village of potters. This became my go-to-weekend place.   On one of my trips I was the first one to reach and patiently sat with the cats while the studios opened for the day.   I tried my hand at making a simple cup.  But it takes 10,000 hours to be a master, who can make it seem so simple. Even though my cup didn't really look like one, I am glad my quest and passion for han...

Pop Art - High Art or My Art

Image
Pop Art was described as a movement of 1950s.  It marked departure from high art to my art that showcased daily use and accessible products. Things like movie and Hollywood posters, product packaging, comic book cover entered the art world and homes.  It was mass produced, cheap and accessible to all.  In current times pop art continue to show up in home décor products like - wall art, throw pillows, bedding, rugs and furniture.  Personally I like to showcase my love for pop art is subtle ways with mixing of monochrome and popping color, in fact lots of color.  This décor doesn't have the to be over the top but can be simple, funny and colorful. Especially with having to spend months working from home pop art has brought spirited color and energy to interiors.  Sharing a few of my favorite pop art products that create happy cheer! Premium Opaque Polyester Fabric with Matte Finish crated by  RetroPlanetGraphics This minimalism décor with pop art pa...

Relax and Rejuvenate

Image
Happiness varies from person to person. For you it could be a run or just watching netflix. But for me, happiness is soaking in a hot tub with bath bombs and sea salt. Accompanied with a glass of wine and a good book, after another exhausting day at work. I presume that many will find this a waste of time and water. I cannot debate on the water part. But I am sure that this is one of the most relaxing experiences ever.  For me a bath is not just getting cleaned up. But it is the feeling of relaxation and rejuvenation at a low price, in the luxury of my own bathtub. It helps my muscles relax and increase circulation. Many times I light a few candles with jazz music which helps me practice mindfulness when I happen to not read. I pay extra attention to my feet as they deserve the pampering after a whole week in heels.  Click here for more options After a soak in my tub of relaxation, I proceed to look up different styles of bath mats, shower curtains and other decorative items f...

Morning Walk To A Korean Temple

Image
Recently I decided to take on a new course for my morning walks.  A near by Buddhist temple has become my good to place.   There are about 900 Buddhist temples in Korea and usually nestled in a natural environment. The temples are mostly made of wood with detailed colorful artwork on its exterior and interiors.  The only sound here is that of birds and leaves rustling in the cool autumn wind.  The calmness is a soothing balm and an attempt to find your true self. These walks to the temple have become my journey in pursuit of happiness. Inside these walls I can let go of the world outside and find my true self.  Feel free to share how you explore your true self and what’s your path to happiness.
